A meteor pelting towards Earth has exploded, setting off booms that echoed over a huge area, with a blast equal to 300 tonnes of TNT.

“It was definitely bigger than a normal fireball, about a yard wide,” Robert Lunsford, a Fireball Program Monitor at the American Meteor Society told the New York Post.
